This podcast is based on Organic Design for Command and Control by John R. Boyd, edited by Chet Richards and Chuck Spinney. It examines traditional approaches to military command and control, strongly criticizes the reliance on technological solutions, and instead proposes a perspective that emphasizes human implicit nature, adaptability, and the importance of mutual understanding and trust. By analyzing historical military examples and theoretical concepts such as "friction," Boyd argues for an "organic" design that prioritizes decentralization, initiative, and rapid adaptation in uncertain situations. Ultimately, he suggests that "Appreciation and Leadership" better describes the desired state than the conventional "Command and Control."
For optimal understanding, we recommend following each podcast with the corresponding presentation slides open.
